Carmona runner-up

Estancia High senior wrestler Victor Carmona finished second in

the 125-pound division at the 46-school Estancia Tournament Saturday,

winning four of his five matches to improve to 23-3 this season.

Three other Newport-Mesa wrestlers earned top-six placings. Costa

Mesa senior Silvio Estrada finished fifth (130), Newport Harbor

senior Nate Geier was sixth (135) and Mesa senior Adam Donovan also

placed sixth (152).

Carmona was defeated in the final by Santa Ana High’s Danny Brito,

who secured a takedown in the final minute to break a 12-12 tie.

It was Carmona’s second loss to Brito, who overcame a 7-4 deficit

to top the Estancia standout at the Edison Tournament earlier this

season.

Carmona suffered swollen cartilage in one ear during the

tournament, which required a medical procedure Saturday night to

drain excess fluid. He was sidelined for Tuesday’s Golden West League

match against Westminster.

Also with a strong effort for Estancia was Martin Diaz, who went

2-2 in the 130-pound category.

Estancia Coach Steve Perez, however, said Carmona is expected to

be cleared to compete in the 32-team Northwood Tournament this

weekend.
