Smackers win Region 143 girls’ crown

The Surf City Smackers followed up their regular season championship
Saturday by winning the AYSO Region 143 girls’ Under-10 Division title by
virtue of a 3-1 victory over the Green & Gold Machine.
Lindsay Mangan scored on a second-quarter breakaway, and Amy Nunez
scored in the second half to put the Smackers (9-1-2 during the regular
season) on top, 2-0, heading into the fourth period. There, Green &
Yellow Machine’s Amy Valdez scored to make it a 2-1 game, but Nunez
scored later in the period to put the game away.
Andrea Gonzalez and Jenna Minton led a strong defensive effort from a
unit consisting of Allison Default, Missy Murphy, Elizabeth Novotny,
Katie Brewster, Brittany Fuller, Hayley Lorenz, Alyssa Jones, and goalies
Dufault and Breanna Flynn.
Kelsey Weston, Mia Sanderson, Miranda Rosen, and Kimya Jafroudi paced
the Green & Yellow Machine on defense, and Heidi Chappell, Caitlin
Boehne, and Valdez led the offense.

RUSH REACHES FINAL FOUR
Orange Coast United Rush girls’ Under-12 soccer club reached the
semifinals of the Coast Soccer League Cup Tournament in San Bernardino by
defeating the Chino Hills Nitemares and Redlands Arsenal Soccer Club by
identical 1-0 scores Saturday. Cindy Mendoza scored off a Courtney
Anderson assist in the Chino Hills match, and Robin Ibbetson scored off a
Brittany Koster feed against Redlands.
At Sunday’s Final Four, OCU dropped a 1-0 decision to the SoCal Blues
Gold team. During the League Cup tournament, the Rush received
outstanding defensive play from goalie Tori Rocke, Elyse VanLeer, Amanda
Shaw, Jennifer Powell, Brianna Baker, and Chelsea Wisdom. Offensive
support was provided by Amy Staudinger, Samantha Castillo, Sasha Key, Ali
Torres and Jaque Anderson.
