Men’s water polo: Newport A wins twice

LOS ALAMITOS - The Newport A men’s water polo team went 3-1 games
in the first two days of the 2000 Men’s Senior Nationals on Friday at the
U.S. Water Polo National Aquatic Center in Los Alamitos.
On Friday, Newport A won its opener, 9-7, over Bruin. Ryan Bailey and
Mike Evans each scored three goals. Newport A then blew out Navy Athletic
Club, 12-6. Goalie Genie Kerr led Newport with 11 saves. Bailey, Ofer
Horn and Mark Hunt each had two goals.
Newport A split two games on Saturday. It beat Concord, 12-8. Bailey
and Hunt each had three goals. But Newport A lost its fourth game to New
York Athletic Club A, 10-7
Newport B dropped its first game on Friday, 11-5, to Concord. Jeff
Powers and Tony Grosso each had two goals. Newport B also lost its second
game, 9-6, to New York Athletic Club A despite 12 saves from Dan Hipp.
But Newport B came back with two wins on Saturday. It pounded Navy AC,
12-5. Grosso and Dan Hayes led their team with three goals each. Newport
B then defeated Trojan, 9-4, behind Jeff Powers’ four goal.
Former Orange Coast College water polo coach Chris Oeding scored twice
to help Long Beach Shore win its opener against Big Valley, 12-7. Oeding
had one goal in Long Beach Shores, 12-3 victory over NYAC B on Saturday.
