CdM scrapbook: DOMINATION MODE

CORONA DEL MAR - The last time there was this much dominance in the
Pacific Coast League, Joe DiMaggio was constructing his legend as a San
Francisco Seal.
Corona del Mar High boys programs, shifted into the PCL from the Sea View
League for the 1999-2000 athletic year, won or shared eight of 12
available league titles, added three second-place finishes, finished
third in the other, and participated in the postseason in every sport in
which it competes.
Volleyball won the CIF Southern Section Division I title and water polo
won the section crown in Division II.
Volleyball, water polo, basketball, track and field and swimming were
outright PCL champions, while football, cross country and golf shared
league supremacy.
Individual accolades enveloped the campus like off-shore breezes, with
senior Kevin Hansen at the forefront.
The Stanford-bound senior was CIF Player of the Year in volleyball,
Newport-Mesa Co-Player of the Year in basketball and the PCL Athlete of
the Year.
Senior Alec Hanson was All-CIF in basketball and volleyball, while
Garrett Gentry (water polo and swimming), Sean Fenton (football and track
and field), as well as cross country and track standouts Travis Beardslee
and Josh Yelsey, were multiple-sport standouts.
Jay Bottom (football), Greg Stampley (volleyball), Billy Eagle (baseball)
and Garrett Bowlus (water polo) were among several All-CIF honorees.
