SACRAMENTO -- Newport Harbor High’s Trevor Jones continued his
monumental senior track and field season Saturday by winning the
300-meter intermediate hurdles at the prestigious Golden West
Invitational at American River Community College.
Jones, the reigning state champion in the 300 hurdles, clocked a
personal-record 36.45 to top the national field, coming from behind down
the stretch.
He was also sixth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.24, just off
his PR of 13.99, which he ran last week to finish second at the state
finals.
“He beat the guy who beat him at Arcadia and he also beat the guy who had
the second-fastest time in the nation,” Newport Harbor Coach Bim Barry
said of Jones’ 300 race.
Corona del Mar High senior Liz Morse, who ran a national-best 2:08.16 to
win the state title last week, was second in the 800 Saturday in 2:09.92.
Newport Harbor junior Amber Steen was fifth in the mile (5:01.2), beating
the current state 1,600 champion Jenny Aldridge from Santa Rosa.
Jones will compete in the National Scholastic Outdoor Championships
Saturday in Raleigh, N.C., and is also scheduled to run at the junior
nationals the following weekend in Denton, Texas.
