I’m wondering if the residents know just how close we came to the city of
Huntington Beach taking leave of its senses, and how close we came to
having a single-room occupancy complex approved for construction in our
city. But, more on that in a moment. It seems that Beach Boulevard in
Huntington Beach is becoming more and more blighted as the less-desirable
[elements of other] cities creep southward into Huntington Beach. As a
longtime resident, I’m becoming more than concerned.
First, the City Council approved a store on Beach Boulevard called the
Condom Revolution. Try explaining that one to your 13-year-old daughter.
It’s all lighted up in purple neon, with all of its wares right in the
front window. As [I’m] only 43 years old, I’m as much for a good time as
anyone, but I’m also discreet when it comes to young people.
Now, at roughly Beach and Talbert Avenue, the city has approved the
building of a strip club. This is what I mean by the blight. I’m curious
what kind of riffraff this will bring to my part of town.
Good job, City Council, for truly thinking this one out. Do we really
need this?
OK, now the single-room occupancy complex, which would have been built at
Beach and Ellis Avenue, right across the street from two bars and a
liquor store. The parking and traffic would have only exacerbated the
problems we’re having in this area.
The rooms were to have been only 250 square feet, to house at least one,
and in some rooms two people, and were to be aimed at the extremely
low-income people. I’m not against these people, and I’ll be the first to
admit that they need affordable housing. I just don’t think that this was
the place to build it.
City Council had already caved and was slated to approve this eyesore
when enough of us spoke in front of City Council to talk them out of it.
My only question -- between the single-room occupancy complex, the strip
club, and the Condom Revolution -- is: Why isn’t any of this stuff built
over in Seacliff?
