Golden West College freshman and former Corona del Mar High
baseball standout Matt Larson was drafted in the 26th round (781st
overall) by the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, the second day of the Major
League Baseball first-year player draft.
Larson was 4-5 with a 7.63 ERA for the Rustlers this year. His 56
strikeouts led the ballclub.
Larson came to Golden West following a stellar three-year varsity career
at CdM, where he had a .353 career batting average, nine home runs and 49
RBIs.
As a senior for the CIF Southern Section Division IV champion Sea Kings,
Larson was 6-5 with a save and a 4.61 ERA. He compiled 68 strikeouts in
71 innings of work.
Larson’s stock has improved from last year, when he was picked in the
28th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
