After a heroic battle with brain cancer, real estate developer and
Newport Beach resident Kevin McAlpin Green died Friday, June 2, 2000,
surrounded by his family at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach. He
was 45.
Mr. Green made an unforgettable impact on those whose lives he touched
before and after he was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, the
deadliest form of brain cancer. He was not only a fun-loving spirit, but
also a man of great integrity.
Mr. Green first learned of the cancer after he collapsed while playing
basketball with friends at the Balboa Bay Club in March 1998. He survived
three brain surgeries and many experimental treatments.
Born in Los Angeles on March 15, 1955, Mr. Green grew up in Hancock Park
and attended Harvard School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from USC in
1977 and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1983, he married Mary McIllece and in 1986 moved to Bayshores in Newport Beach
Mr. Green began his career working for The Seeley Co., a Los
Angeles-based real estate brokerage firm started by his grandfather, Roy
C. Seeley, in 1908. Thereafter, he formed his own development firm, Green
Development, specializing in the construction of industrial properties in
Southern California.
In the early 1990s, he joined forces with Turner Development Corporation
where he developed a number of successful projects with friend and
neighbor Rusty Turner.
While Mr. Green enjoyed a successful real estate career, his greatest joy
was his wife and their two sons, Brett, 12, and J.B., 9. He was a devoted
son to his parents, Max L. Green and the late Jeanette B. Green. He was a
loving brother to his three sisters, Marcia G. Redford, Linda G. Alshuler
and Barbara G. Welch, and admired by his 10 nieces and nephews.
“Chief,” as Mr. Green was affectionately known by close friends and
family, served as president of the Bayshores Community Assn. and coached
multiple youth sports teams. He was a member of The Pacific Club, The
Balboa Bay Club and La Grulla Gun Club. He enjoyed many activities and
had a passion for basketball, skiing, surfing, golf, volleyball, bird
hunting and traveling.
A memorial service is planned for at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, at St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 600 Saint Andrews Road in Newport Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Green may be made to the
Infinity Fund Brain Cancer Research, UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer
Center Foundation, to the attention of Dr. Timothy F. Cloughesy,
executive director, 710 Westwood Plaza, Suite 1-230, Los Angeles
90095-1769.
