The Huntington Beach Goald soccer team brought home the gold as it
battled its way through pool play to win the girls Under-12 Division
championship at the Irvine Cup Championship Tournament held last weekend
at UC Irvine.
The Goald, comprised of all-star players from Huntington Beach,
Fountain Valley, and AYSO Region 117, allowed just two goals during the
two day tournament. Offensively, Lisa Crowley and Sheri Rosen each scored
two goals apiece for the Goald.
Their title run began with goalkeeper Rachel Hays, fronted by the play
of defenders Erin McCarthy, Julia Moreno, and Tetua Toplak, posting a
shutout in a 1-0 victory over Camarillo. Next came a 4-1 win over
Ontario, behind the scoring of Diane Crowley, Britney Koster, and Lisa
Crowley.
Lisa Crowley’s goal off an assist from Melinda Rackliffe was the lone
score in game No. 3, a 1-0 victory over Canyon Country.
In the title game against undefeated Lake Forest, Lisa Crowley scored
once as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation play.
The outcome of the match was determined on penalty kicks, and Hays stoped
two Lake Forest shot attempts, while teammates Lisa Crowley, Diane
Crowley, Nicole Edwards, and Britney Koster each found the back of the
net to give the Goald the crown.
