OCC football transfers increase to 12

Orange Coast College football coach Mike Taylor has announced that

two more former players will be moving on to four-year schools to

continue their athletic careers, bringing the number to 12.

Offensive lineman Amara Dunzo will continue to play at Lewis & Clark

University this fall, while kicker David Yonts will play for Bethany

University of Kansas.

Other signings throughout the off-season include quarterback Jared Flint

and running back Raymond Ohrel (University of Hawaii), defensive lineman

Kent Anderson (UNLV), Jimmie Banks (professional tryout), David Castleton

(Cal State Fullerton, basketball), offensive lineman Jesse Chagolla and

Johnny Garcia (Northern State of North Dakota), linebacker Adin

Cunningham (Chapman), defensive back Bobby Johnson (University of

Buffalo) and linebacker Doug McDaniel (West Liberty University of West

Virginia).

Along with the player transfers, Taylor will also have a familiar face

returning to help the Pirates.

Faasamala “Junior” Tagaloa, OCC’s all-time leading receiver with 119

catches, 2,113 yards and 22 touchdowns in 1986-87, will coach the wide

receivers next year, replacing Phil Cooper, who will focus on the

quarterbacks.

Also joining the Bucs’ coaching staff is Kirk Byers. Byers played with

Taylor at Santa Ana College as well as Oregon State University and was

schooled by former St. Louis Rams head coach Rich Brooks. He will be in

charge of the secondary.

The University of Massachusetts women’s water polo senior standout Katie

Grogan (Costa Mesa High) was a first-team All-American selection this

year, the first first-team selection in school history.

Grogan led the Minutewomen in scoring for the fourth year in a row with

68 goals and 35 assists.

It’s the fourth year in a row that Grogan was an All-American selection.

She earned second-team honors her first three years.

Grogan in the school’s all-time leader in points (571), goals (336), assists (235), shots (608), ejections drawn (150), blocks (19), steals

(351) and swim-offs won (147).
