Holiday events make for busy calendar

Holiday celebrations are getting into full swing, and plenty of events are coming up in the area the rest of this month. Here are many of them:
Costa Mesa
The Segerstrom Center for the Arts has several holiday shows on the schedule:
• “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas”: The musical will open at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, with additional performances at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12, 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 and 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14. Tickets start at $29.
• “Nutcracker for Kids”: A condensed version of the classic ballet, with a holiday sing-along as the finale. 10 and 11:30 a.m. Dec. 13. Tickets are $35 to $60.
• “Handel’s Glorious Messiah”: The Pacific Symphony and Pacific Chorale will perform at 3 p.m. Dec. 14. Tickets are $25 to $185.
• Celtic Woman: “Home for Christmas – The Symphony Tour”: The all-female Irish music ensemble will perform music from its second Christmas album, “Home For Christmas,” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15. Tickets are $49 to $119.
• “Holiday Organ Spectacular,” presented by the Pacific Symphony: 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Tickets are $15 to $75.
• “Tis the Season!”: The Pacific Chorale, Pacific Symphony, Southern California Children’s Concert Chorus and organist Craig Williams will perform at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 21 and 8 p.m. Dec. 22. Tickets are $29 to $139.
• “Fiesta Navidad”: Grammy-winning Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano will play traditional mariachi music along with holiday carols at 8 p.m. Dec. 23. The concert also will feature La Posada, a reenactment of Joseph and Mary’s pilgrimage to Bethlehem. Tickets are $29 to $89.

Corona del Mar
Sherman Library & Gardens will be decorated with a thousand luminarias, holiday lights and other decorations from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 12-13 at 2647 E. Coast Highway.
There also will be caroling, coffee, hot chocolate, cookies, wine, champagne and children’s activities.
Tickets are $7 ($5 for Sherman members) and free for children younger than 5.
On Dec. 13, Sherman will host a holiday-basket workshop for children at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $35 ($30 for members) and $25 for a second child.

Irvine
The Festival Ballet Theatre will present “The Nutcracker” featuring professional dancers and dance students at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive. Newport Beach
The Island Hotel’s pastry chef, Andy de la Cruz, will offer children 5 and older a chance to create and decorate gingerbread houses to take home. The class will begin at 11 a.m. Dec. 13 at the hotel, 690 Newport Center Drive.
The cost is $75 per child. Parental supervision is required.

Fashion Island will host a menorah lighting with music and more to celebrate Hanukkah at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 in the Atrium Gardens.

The 106th annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade sets sail from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 17-21 with the theme “Deck the Hulls with Bows of Jolly.”
Multimillion-dollar yachts dressed up in holiday lights and Christmas scenes will join decorated kayaks, canoes and other vessels in a 14-mile cruise around Newport Harbor. The parade will begin and end off Bay Island. Actress Leslie Mann and singer Mark McGrath are the grand marshals.

The Resort at Pelican Hill will host Breakfast with Santa from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 20, featuring music and a candy buffet along with a breakfast including scrambled eggs, chicken apple sausage and French toast. The cost is $60 per person, including a photo with Santa. Parental supervision is required.
