Ballot initiatives expected next November

Legal Marijuana: Multiple proposals are circulating that would legalize marijuana for adult recreational use and impose taxes on growth and sales.
Plastic-bag ban*: Voters will decide whether they agree with the 2014 law that phases in a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.
Tax extension: Organized labor and healthcare advocates want to extend an income-tax increase on California’s wealthiest past its 2018 expiration date.
Gun control: Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom hopes to ban possession and sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and to require instant background checks on people buying ammunition.
School Bond*: This initiative would authorize up to $9 billion in new state bonds for K-12 school construction and renovation.
Legislative transparency: This potential measure would require all bills in the Legislature to be in print and available to the public at least 72 hours before a vote.
Tobacco tax: Multiple proposals would raise cigarette taxes by $2 a pack, with the money going to cancer research and healthcare for low-income Californians.
Minimum wage: More than one proposal would boost the state’s minimum wage from $10 to $15 an hour, with future increases linked to inflation.
