Letters: An LAPD officer we can’t trust

Re “Beck sends wrong message,” Column, March 26

This article is excellent. However, I would add this: A former ranking LAPD official is quoted as saying that the finding that the officer had been untruthful rendered him “basically useless to LAPD,” because of an obligation to disclose it to defendants in future prosecutions in which he is involved. True, but such thinking is insufficient, because it assumes those defendants are guilty; the greater risk to the public good is that innocent people may be arrested and/or prosecuted on the basis of unreliable reports from such an officer.
