Readers React: Islamic State has the U.S. right where it wants it

To the editor: Any weakening of Islamic State that comes from U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria and Iraq will be vastly overshadowed by the strength and unity that arises from different people sharing a common perceived foe: the U.S. (“U.S. won Arab support for airstrikes, but challenges remain,” Sept. 23)

The ideology of Islamic extremism is grounded in the imagery of resistance to infidel oppressors. By initiating the military action in Syria, the United States once again steps most obligingly into this despised role.

The Obama administration’s claims of a broad-based coalition are dubious at best, with “partner” nations reluctant to admit their involvement. Morally, ethically and practically, all things considered, the U.S. should get out of Syria immediately and take the “coalition” with it.

To the editor: Have you noticed that the five Arab countries supporting the U.S. attack on Islamic State are all absolute monarchies? It has always been easy for Washington to bend kings and other dictators to its will. Isn’t that how they stay in power?

Does anyone believe it was statesmanship by which President Obama recruited Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates? Has anyone polled actual Arabs, or do we speak only to royalty?
