Letters: Obama deserves credit on Syria

Re “Obama defends actions on Syria,” Sept. 16
President Obama’s critics are quick to point out that Russian President Vladimir Putin has come out the sole winner for his actions to persuade Syria to give up its chemical weapons. I say that, if the deal is successful, it is a win-win for Obama and Putin.
As Obama has pointed out, his threat to take bold military action against the Syrian government precipitated the conditions for diplomacy. Had Obama not made the first move, how likely is it that Russia would have gotten involved?
