To the editor: The governments of China and Nicaragua should realize that these kinds of mega projects — the Aswan Dam, the Hoover Dam, the Three Gorges Dam and, now, the proposed canal through Nicaragua — are the antithesis of what the world needs now. (“Secrecy and doubt shroud Nicaragua’s huge canal plans,” Sept. 9)
They are products of a 1950s understanding of things:
Let us demonstrate our power, our prowess, in the name of progress! Let us bisect the Earth, the lake, the people, the animals. Let us be God and be sure everyone knows it.
Now it is time for humility in the face of all the damage we have done. Let’s pull back on these mistakes that we once thought were miracles. Remove dams, free rivers, leave people in their ancestral homes, and let the Earth be.
This is the way forward.
