San Antonio standoff ends peacefully

SAN ANTONIO -- A daylong standoff at a downtown motel that left a police officer shot in the head ended Monday when the suspect surrendered, authorities said.
Police had responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at a Super 8 motel Monday morning when a male guest fired at them, San Antonio Police Sgt. Javier Salazar said.
A woman in the motel room escaped, Salazar said. But the man fired through a door, striking a police officer in the head, according to Police Chief William McManus.
Officer Aaron Terrazas, 34, an eight-year veteran of the department, was in intensive care but stable, Salazar said. Terrazas was expected to survive.
The standoff continued Monday afternoon as SWAT negotiators arrived. Police closed streets and lanes of a highway, and nearby schools were locked down.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the 38-year-old suspect surrendered peacefully. Police recovered a handgun from the motel room, Salazar said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was detained and was being questioned by detectives, Salazar said.
