A 107-year-old Arkansas man was killed by SWAT officers who responded to calls about a domestic disturbance, authorities said.
The incident happened Saturday night in Pine Bluff, Ark., where Monroe Isadore had pointed a gun at two people inside a home, police said.
Those two people left the house, but Isadore remained inside. When police identified themselves, he opened fire through the door of a bedroom, where he had taken refuge, Pine Bluff police spokesman Lt. David E. Price said in a statement.
Police called for backup and began negotiating with Isadore. SWAT officers used a camera to verify that Isadore was armed with a handgun, Price said.
“SWAT inserted gas into the room after it was evident negotiations were unsuccessful, in hopes Isadore would surrender peacefully,” Price said.
When the SWAT team broke into the bedroom, Price said, Isadore shot at officers, leading police to return fire.
Isadore was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m. from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher told the Pine Bluff Commercial.
Police said the investigation was ongoing.
Pine Bluff, a city of about 50,000, is about 45 miles south of Little Rock.
