Deputies wound man holding ‘black object’ -- a cellphone

Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man in the 1700 block of Burnside Avenue in the Mid-City area Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release.
Deputies responded to a Burnside Avenue address and saw a man who closely matched the description of a suspected felon. Upon contact with deputies, the man reached into his waistband and removed several objects, including narcotics and “a black object he held in his hand,” the release said.
A deputy opened fire, believing the man was arming himself. The man ran and climbed over a wall at the back of a residence. When the deputies caught up with him, he knelt and faced the officers with the black object in his hand, according to the release. Both officers opened fire, injuring the man.
The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for “non life-threatening injuries,” according to the release.
The victim was not the suspected felon that originally drew officers to the scene, said Sgt. Richard Pena of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The black object turned out to be a black cellphone.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
Sheriff’s investigators are looking into the incident. Pena said the investigators are not yet releasing details about the experience level of the deputies involved in the shooting.
