A convicted child molester facing a life sentence in prison was found dead in Carlsbad, officials said Tuesday. Suicide was suspected.
Joseph Vincent McCarron, 58, was free on $500,000 bail during his jury trial. But when he did not appear in court to hear the Nov. 14 verdict, detectives from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department began looking for him.
McCarron was convicted of 11 felony counts, with each count involving more than one victim. He was facing a sentence of 165 years in prison, officials said.
His body was found Saturday in a wooded area behind a park in Carlsbad.
While a cause of death has not been determined by the county Medical Examiner, officials suspect suicide and note that there are no suspects.
His death “ended a potential threat to public safety,” said Dist. Atty. Bonnie Dumanis.
