El Camino Real wins state ‘Super Quiz,’ unofficial results indicate

El Camino Real Charter High School in Los Angeles may have come out on top during the “Super Quiz” portion of the California Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento on Saturday, according to unofficial results.
Students from El Camino appeared to have earned 93 out of a possible 108 points during the fast, game-show-styled relay. The nine-member team finished just one point ahead of reigning Los Angeles Unified Academic Decathlon champion John Marshall High, which had an unofficial tally of 92.
Two other teams from L.A. Unified rounded out the top four: Granada Hills Charter High finished third with an unofficial tally of 91 points, followed by Franklin High School with 82 points. Altogether, 25 teams from L.A. County competed in the state finals.
The Super Quiz event wrapped up a three-day competition at Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium that tested students’ knowledge of World War I through 10 subjects, including music, art, math, science and economics. The winner of the Super Quiz usually finishes high in the overall competition.
Official results of the statewide competition will be announced during an awards ceremony at noon on Sunday.
During the high-pressure Super Quiz, El Camino faced off against teams from 64 other high schools. Teams have seven seconds to answer a series of multiple choice questions.
During the L.A. Unified competition in February, El Camino and Marshall tied for first place in the “Super Quiz” with 4,800 out of 5,400 points. Both schools beat out reigning state and national champion, Granada Hills, which earned 4,350 points.
The top two winners from California will compete in the national Academic Decathlon competition next month in Honolulu, Hawaii.
