A person was killed early Sunday after a vehicle went over the embankment of the 91 Freeway in Long Beach and burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred about 4:40 a.m. when the SUV went over the right shoulder of the westbound 91 Freeway just west of Paramount Boulevard, said CHP officer Tony Polizzo. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames with one person inside, he said.
No details about the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, were available, Polizzo said. A SigAlert was issued and the slow lane was blocked for about 3 hours, but the area was cleared by 8 a.m.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
