Small brush fire breaks out near La Verne neighborhood

A brush fire in the steep ravines of a La Verne residential neighborhood quickly grew to 3 acres Friday afternoon as helicopters dropped water.
Heavy smoke was visible from the nearby 210 Freeway as ground crews worked to keep the fire line away from homes. At one point, television news footage showed flames advancing perilously close to a group of homes situated on the edge of a ravine before water-dropping helicopters were able to douse the fire.
Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Keith Mora told KTLA-TV that the fire had grown to 3 acres as of about 1:30 p.m., but that firefighters were not involved in any mandatory evacuations.
As helicopters dropped off ground crews at the top of the ravines to build containment lines, he said conditions were favorable.
“We do have the cooperation of the weather,” Mora said.
