Robbery suspect killed by deputies had child in car

A man shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies Thursday night after holding up a woman in her home near West Covina and then attempting to flee had a woman and a child in his getaway car, authorities said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, tried to rob the woman at gunpoint sometime before 5 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said, but deputies were called to the scene by her son, who said a black car was waiting outside.

When deputies arrived, the black car was already speeding toward them and a chase ensued, the Sheriff’s Department said. That turned into a foot pursuit when the man left his car and ran through a Bestway Market, officials said.

He then ran from backyard to backyard trying to escape, but deputies caught up to him in the 19100 block of Elberland Street at about 5:20 p.m., when a deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A weapon was not immediately recovered, but authorities said a search was underway.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

A woman who was also in the car was arrested, and a child in the vehicle was taken into protective custody, officials said.

Since January 2007, at least 286 people have been slain in officer-involved shootings across Los Angeles County, according to The Times’ Homicide Report database.
