San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, the California Highway Patrol said.
Cabrera, 27, was arrested without incident shortly after midnight Wednesday while driving on California 94 near the eastern San Diego County community of Dulzura, the CHP said.
He was stopped by the Border Patrol and was turned over to the CHP. He was cited and released into the custody of his mother-in-law, the CHP said.
Cabrera was suspended for 50 games last year for using performance enhancing drugs. Cabrera led the National League with 44 stolen bases in 2012.
This season Cabrera has been on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. The team has wanted to send him to the Lake Elsinore farm team for rehabilitation, but no date has been set.
“We were made aware of an incident involving Everth Cabrera this week, and we take this matter very seriously,” the Padres said in a statement.
“We are in the process of gathering information and are in communication with Major League Baseball. We refrain from further comment at this time.”
