LAPD seeks attackers in man’s shooting death

Police on Monday night identified a man killed in a South Los Angeles shooting as 37-year-old Sigmund Thomas Chornes.
Chornes was shot around 9:40 p.m. Sunday while standing near the sidewalk in the 4000 block of Abourne Road, the Los Angeles Police Department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chornes had been visiting friends and left a home when he was attacked by a man who stepped from the passenger’s side of a light-colored SUV and began shooting, the LAPD said.

The man got back in the SUV, which was seen heading westbound on Santo Tomas Drive.

Since 2007, at least 39 homicides have been reported in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood where Chornes was slain, according to The Times Homicide Report database.
