A woman who allegedly killed her two children in a Santa Ana motel room this weekend was charged Monday with two counts of murder by poison, authorities said.
The bodies of Marilyn Edge’s two children were found by police in a room at a Hampton Inn in Santa Ana, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, spokesman for the Santa Ana Police Department.
Authorities were led to the room by Edge after she drove her car into an electrical box in Costa Mesa on Saturday morning. Before getting out of the vehicle she tried to choke herself with an electrical wire, Bertagna said.
After she was out of the vehicle, she told responding officers about the children.
The Associated Press reported that Edge’s ex-husband had recently received full custody of their 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter. According to the report, Edge on Friday sent a text message to her ex-husband saying she would take the children to Georgia, where he lives.
According to prosecutors, Edge, 42, of Scottsdale, Ariz., poisoned the children sometime Saturday morning.
Edge is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court. Prosecutors said they will request that she be held without bail.
She faces life in state prison without parole if convicted.
