A surfer falls off his board Thursday while catching a wave near the Malibu Pier. Restoration of the pier is still in progress, but one of the four planned restaurants, The Malibu Pier Club, is already open. The two historic 1940s buildings seen at the end of the pier will house Ruby’s Shake Shack and a sport-fishing retail shop, scheduled to open in August. A surf museum is being added on the second floor of one of the buildings. (Mel Melcon / Los Angeles Times)
Scully Cloete, general manager of the Malibu Restaurant Group, stands in front of The Beachcomber Cafe, a restaurant scheduled to open July 3 on the Malibu Pier. The building once housed Alice’s Restaurant, named after the famous Arlo Guthrie song, which gained fame for serving its legendary B-52 cocktail to droves of visitors. Beachcomber bartenders Tai Miracle, left, and Robin Brown prepare Thursday for the restaurants opening. The pier’s “Grand Reopening” event Sunday marks the first time it has been open to the public since 1995, when storm damage rendered the structure unsafe and forced the state to close it down.
