Tachi, a Catalina Island fox raised in captivity, goes for a walk near a sign that warns motorists to watch for Tachi’s wild cousins, who frequently cross a road that traverses the interior between Avalon and Two Harbors. Nearly wiped out by a distemper epidemic in 1999, the Catalina Island fox has made a dramatic recovery. Members of the Catalina Island Conservancy now estimate the island’s fox population at about 1,300. (Luis Sinco / Los Angeles Times)
