SOCHI, Russia -- Ola Vigen Hattestad of Norway won the Olympic gold medal Tuesday in the men’s cross-country sprint.
A collision early in the finals took out half of the six-man field, leaving Hattestad and Teodor Peterson of Sweden to battle for the gold. Peterson settled for the silver medal, finishing 1.22 seconds behind Hattestad.
The bronze medal went to Sweden’s Emil Joensson, who fell far behind at the start of the race and then benefited from the carnage in front of him to pick up a third-place finish.
Norwegian skiers won both the cross-country sprints contested Tuesday. Maiken Caspersen Falla was the winner of the women’s race.
