Building DALE, the 2013 Solar Decathlon house from SCI-Arc and Caltech
On Monday, members of the SCI-Arc/Caltech team did some final checks of their design on the SCI-Arc campus in downtown L.A. while teammates prepared the concrete foundation for the tracks at the Solar Decathlon site in Irvine. Rooftop solar panels, also mobile, will be installed once the modules have been craned iinto place at the Great Park. (Craig Nakano / Los Angeles Times)
Members of the DALE team do some final checks of the queen Murphy bed at SCI-Arc on Monday in preparation for the house’s move to the Great Park. During the day, the bed can flip up and cabinetry (out of view) can slide on ceiling tracks to lie flat against the closed bed, allowing the bedroom to function as an additional living room. On Monday, a SCI-Arc/Caltech team member stands in front of an oven with induction range top, all packed up for the trip from downtown L.A. to the Great Park in Orange County. Behind him is the kitchen sink and cabinet. To the right are sliding glass doors to the outside; to the left you see a shaft of sunshine coming through a small space between the two movable living modules. (Craig Nakano / Los Angeles Times)
With the Czech Technical University’s house taking shape in the background, the SCI-Arc/Caltech house remained just a concrete foundation on Tuesday. Members needed the concrete to cure for two days before craning the modules on top. (Craig Nakano / Los Angeles Times)
