Photos: Step by step guide to wearing matte lips
NARS makeup artist Uzo, begins by evening out the model Jamie Ridge’s complexion. You want a satin finish on the skin, nothing too dewy or too matte. Start by using bronzer to warm the skin. Apply it to the cheek bones and apples of the cheek. Then apply your foundation on top of the bronzer, blending color all over the face with the finger tips. Last, apply concealer to perfect any discoloration or blemishes. (Kirk McKoy / Los Angeles Times)
Applying the matte lipstick: Start with the lipstick color in the center of the lip. You dont want to start at the corners, as it can get too cakey. Starting in the center makes it easier to blend out. Once the lipstick is on, you have the framework for putting on the lip liner. (Kirk McKoy / Los Angeles Times)
Choose a lip liner color that is the same exact color as the lipstick. This is a much more modern way to wear liner. Smile with your lips closed and apply the lip liner. This helps fill in ridges and lines and prevents feathering. (Kirk McKoy / Los Angeles Times)
For a little more dimension on the lips, you can add a dab of gloss that is a few shades deeper than the lipstick. The lips will still be matte, this just gives them more dimension and luster. (Kirk McKoy / Los Angeles Times)

Wearing matte red lips with no eye makeup is a very modern approach to the trend, but if you want to add a little eye makeup, make sure to do it sparingly so the whole look doesn’t look like overly done. Apply a cream shadow like a wash of color on the eyelid in a shade such as copper or bronze. Brush a little bit of a powder shadow in a similar shade over the cream shadow.
