ESPN leads Sports Emmy Award nominations

ESPN enjoyed a big lead over its sports rivals in the number of nominations the sprawling organization and its affiliates received for the Sports Emmy Awards on Wednesday. The main ESPN channel led the way with 30 nominations, but combined with ESPN2, ABC, ESPN Deportes and the online ventures Grantland and ESPNW, the total rose to a whopping 46.
The HBO documentary series “24/7,” which follows athletes in the days leading up to a major sporting event, was the show with the most nominations. It grabbed seven, including for outstanding sports documentary series.
More than 180 nominees were announced in 39 categories, including live sports special and play-by-play personality.

The awards will be handed out at the Frederick P. Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center at the Time Warner Center in New York City on May 6.
Ted Turner, founder of CNN and former owner of the Atlanta Braves, will be given the lifetime achievement award at the ceremony.
