Donna Carnes picked May 31, a year after the family ended its underwater search effort, as the date of a daylong tribute to her husband at UC Berkeley, where he completed his undergraduate and doctoral studies. She’s careful not to call the gathering a funeral. You cant bury an empty casket and be done with it, just as I cant, as some people suggest meaning well, grab onto a fact and build a story around that as to what happened to Jim and believe it, she said.
