Carona wants 2 charges dismissed

Defense lawyers asked a judge Friday to dismiss two witness-tampering charges against former Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona, claiming the language in the indictment is too vague.
The former sheriff, who resigned in January while awaiting trial on corruption charges, has previously asked U.S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford to dismiss the other four charges against him.
The most recent motion addresses two counts that Carona attempted to persuade former Assistant Sheriff Donald Haidl to provide false testimony to a grand jury.
Defense lawyers say the language in the indictment is so vague, it leaves “Carona to guess what he has to defend against.”
A hearing on the motion is scheduled March 28. Carona’s trial is scheduled June 10.
