Halberstam crash driver gets 5 days

A 27-year-old UC Berkeley journalism student who was behind the wheel in the car crash that killed Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Halberstam was sentenced Thursday to five days in jail.

San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Mark Forcum said he believed that graduate student Kevin Jones did not intentionally cause Halberstam’s death. He recommended that Jones serve the time in a supervised work program.

Halberstam was killed April 23 when Jones ran a red light in Menlo Park and Halberstam’s side of the car was struck by an oncoming car. Halberstam died from a punctured heart.

As part of his sentence, Jones was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service in a school where he could honor the author by helping children learn to read and write.
