SAX MAN STEERS THE SHIP

“Maceo, I want you to blow . . .!” It was one of the defining lines in funk and soul music, shouted by James Brown to trigger a driving set of choruses from Maceo Parker’s funk-inspired alto saxophone. Parker, pictured, has had a career reaching far beyond Brown -- working with musical partners as diverse as Ray Charles, George Clinton and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This time out, he’s driving his own Mothership, laying down torrents of funk from his just released, appropriately titled album, “Roots and Grooves.” 8 p.m. Sun., the Roxy. $25. (310) 278-9457
