* Boston 3, at Buffalo 2 (SO): Phil Kessel scored the lone shootout goal in rallying the Bruins from a two-goal deficit. Marco Sturm, who tied it by scoring with 3:50 left in regulation, and Zdeno Chara scored third-period goals for the Bruins. Backup goalie Alex Auld, making his first start in since Jan. 17, stopped 24 shots, including Buffalo’s three shootout attempts.
* Carolina 2, at Washington 1: Erik Cole and Andrew Ladd scored first-period goals, and the Hurricanes moved back into first place in the Southeast Division ahead of the Capitals. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin was held without a point for the 11th time in 56 games this season.
* at San Jose 2, Columbus 1 (OT): Joe Thornton scored a power-play goal 1:49 into overtime, and Evgeni Nabokov earned his NHL-best 30th victory of the season with 31 saves. Patrick Marleau won a key faceoff in overtime, and Sandis Ozolinsh got the puck to Thornton for a shot that apparently went under Marleau’s stick and between the legs of goalie Fredrik Norrena. Nabokov leads New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur by two victories in the league standings.
* Ducks 2, at New Jersey 1: Ryan Carter scored his first two NHL goals in the first period.
