NEW YORK — Christina Norman, president of MTV since 2005 and a protege of former Viacom Inc. Chief Executive Tom Freston, resigned her job effective at the end of the month, the head of her division told employees in an e-mail Thursday.
The executive, Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks and Logo Group, said Norman, a 17-year veteran of MTV and sister music channel VH1, wanted “to explore something new.”
Norman could not be reached for comment.
Under Freston, who left Viacom in 2006, Norman was elevated from the MTV promotion department in 2002 to become general manager of VH1 and, two years later, its president. She was credited with turning around the then-troubled network by injecting a jolt of creativity into what was regarded as a bureaucratic culture.
After a year and a half as head of VH1, Norman was put in charge of MTV, Viacom’s flagship cable TV brand.
“Christina has led with incredible integrity, creativity, business savvy, perspective, spirit and humor,” Toffler said in his note.
No replacement was named. Toffler will assume Norman’s duties on an interim basis, an MTV spokeswoman said.
