Senate panel OKs lottery chief

A state Senate panel supported confirmation of the governor’s appointment of Joan Borucki as director of the California Lottery after she apologized for authorizing an employee appreciation dinner that cost $43,000 and featured mock lottery games with prizes.
Borucki’s confirmation was recommended by the Senate Rules Committee after the chairman, Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland), said she erred in allowing the dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel in Sacramento.
“I think the judgment was flawed,” Perata said. “I don’t think it was a hanging offense.”
Borucki told the panel that she has brought long-term vision to improve the lottery’s sales and that her employees are behind her, despite her mistake in authorizing the expensive dinner.
“I am sorry,” she said. “I am very embarrassed and I am angry with myself for letting this happen.”
