IT’S ALIVE! IT’S ALIVE!

Before Dr. Frankenstein, there was Rabbi Loew, whose Golem (a mystically animated brute of Jewish lore) went awry in 16th century Prague in “Der Golem.” A stylized silent fable about force without scruples, this 1920 German Expressionist film from co-director, co-writer and costar Paul Wegener (pictured, as the monster, with Ernst Deutsch, far left, as Rabbi Famulus) was a precursor to many an American horror flick. Plus, its skewed sets and haunting images (think mad-scientist lightning) are almost as unnerving as the Golem’s wig.
