FUN WITH FUNGI

“Mushrooms are the rock stars of the fungal world. They comprise only 2% of known fungi, but they’re the most obvious and the most attractive,” says Steven Pencall of the Los Angeles Mycological Society. Instead of getting hooked on drugs and trashing hotel rooms, the fifth kingdom will take center stage at the 24th Annual Wild Mushroom Fair with mushroom cultivation and cooking demos. Two forays, one in the Santa Monica Mountains and one in the Cleveland National Forest, will be held on Saturday to collect wild mushrooms for display at the fair. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sun., the L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia. $2.50-$7. (323) 292-1900; www.lamushrooms.org
