Suit seeks to alter deputies’ pact

The county has filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate a portion of the terms of its 2001 labor pact with the union representing its sheriff’s deputies, saying that a deal that gave deputies a retroactive increase in their pensions violated the state Constitution.
The county believes the move, if successful, would shave $187 million off its retirement payments over the next 30 years, reducing the $2.3-billion deficit in its pension fund.
The case was filed late Friday afternoon but was not made public until Monday. No hearing dates have been set.
