OLINDA — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatal shooting involving a 13-year-old boy who they believe shot and killed his 14-year-old friend in Olinda.
Shasta County Sheriff’s Capt. Dave Compomizzo said deputies responded to a shooting at a mobile home Saturday afternoon.
They found the victim, Rusty Hayward, wounded, and tried to resuscitate him. Hayward was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Compomizzo said the 13-year-old boy whom they believe fired the shot has been released to his mother’s custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
There were three boys in a room together when the gun fired, Compomizzo said, and the investigation will determine whether the weapon was fired accidentally or intentionally.
The third boy witnessed the shooting, he said.
The suspect’s name was not released because of his age.
