With Tiger hitting his prime in his recent crushing of the field at Torrey Pines, it is time to level the field using the same handicap system that we amateurs have used for decades. This way, using their scoring average, players can get the appropriate number of strokes from Tiger and make the event competitive, rather than a fight for second place.
For example, Phil Mickelson would get two strokes a round, Fred Couples three, and someone like Colin Montgomerie would get five or six.

It’s clear that it is time for the PGA to break the tour into divisions -- the Professional division and the Tiger division. It will give the pros something to play for. And who knows, maybe someday there will be more than one golfer qualified to compete in the top division.

While the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines was over Friday, when Tiger took the lead for good, we continued to watch golf on TV over the weekend like those rubbernecking at an accident on the freeway. As we knew the outcome was in doubt only for second place, we couldn’t take our eyes off this mastery of the golf swing and course management.
While I should have been working on the honey-do list, which I blamed on the rain, I can tell you I’ll be wishing for rain every Sunday when Tiger plays.
