Violent protests in Kashmir

Hundreds of protesters chanting independence slogans clashed with soldiers in Srinagar, the main city in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, on the last day of voting in state elections.
At least nine people were injured when troops fired tear gas and used bamboo clubs, a police officer said.
Separatists have urged residents to protest and boycott the poll. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both.
