A powerful bomb tore through a food court in Zamboanga city, killing at least six people and injuring scores while U.S. military officers were in town to discuss helping the government fight Islamist rebels.
The Americans were unhurt in the early evening attack on Mindanao island, officials said. There was no evidence that they were targeted.
Lt. Gen. Roy Cimatu of the Philippine military’s Southern Command said among the suspects was the Abu Sayyaf, an extremist Muslim group. The U.S. officers were on Mindanao to talk about how the United States can help the Philippine government fight the Abu Sayyaf, which allegedly has ties to suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden.
