Heir Apparent to Jiang on Tour

MOSCOW — Vice President Hu Jintao of China met with President Vladimir V. Putin on Saturday to discuss the war against terrorism and events in Afghanistan.
Hu arrived in Moscow on Saturday on the first leg of a five-nation tour that will give foreign leaders a chance to talk to the man expected to become China’s next leader.
Hu went directly from the airport to the Kremlin for a meeting with Putin. In 90 minutes, they discussed the strategic partnership between Russia and China, the international anti-terrorism campaign and the prospects of a post-Taliban government in Afghanistan, according to Sergei E. Prikhodko, Putin’s deputy chief of staff.
Hu’s trip stops in Russia, Britain, France, Spain and Germany.
Hu, 59, is expected to be named leader of the Chinese Communist Party next year, replacing President Jiang Zemin. Jiang’s term as president ends in 2003, and Hu is expected to also receive that title.
