COSTA MESA

The Planning Commission on Monday approved a multimillion-dollar bridge over Bear Street that will link South Coast Plaza to Crystal Court. The bridge is intended to strengthen the connection between the two shopping areas.
The proposal will be forwarded to the City Council for review at its Jan. 18 meeting. Mall management plans to have the bridge completed in time for next year’s holiday season.
The span, designed by Kathryn Gustafson, will connect an outdoor garden plaza near Macy’s and Tiffany’s on the South Coast Plaza side with the third-floor level of Crystal Court. The final cost estimate has not been determined because some construction details are still to be worked out.
