Man Held After Santa Ana Police Fire at, Chase Him

A 19-year-old man was in custody Saturday after police chased him in squad cars, fired shots at him and subdued him following a foot chase in Santa Ana.

Residents called police with complaints about a man driving around with a gun on South Spruce Street about 7:20 p.m. Friday, said Sgt. George Kopitch. Nearby, police attempted to pull over a car going west on Edinger Avenue. The car sped away, with police in pursuit, stopping a short distance later on South Shelley Street, Kopitch said.

An officer fired two rounds when he saw the driver reach into the waistband of his pants, missing with both shots. Kopitch said 19-year-old suspect Salvador Mares tried to run away on foot, but gave up when other officers arrived to join the chase.
